Subject: Getting a KFLOP and a Gecko G540 to get along
I'm sure I'm not the first to try getting a KFLOP to drive a Gecko G540, but for the life of me if I can figure out how to get it to work. The KFLOP appears to be working correctly, as it connects to KMotion properly and responds to the Version command and flashes properly (and is run off a dedicated power supply). I've made up a cable to connect pins 15 and 16 on the KFLOP JP7 to pins 2 and 3 on the DB25 on the Gecko, set Channel 0 in Config&Flash to No Input, Step Dir, Input 0 (open loop, so I think this is unneeded), Output 8. The Fault light on the Gecko is not on, so near as I can figure this should work. Sadly when I go to the Step Response screen and set it up per the Step&Dir example nothing happens when I hit Move. Well, that's not quite true.... On the Axis screen the Dest changes, but the Position does not and the stepper just sits there. The Gecko worked just fine on the printer port of the computer I'm replacing, but seeing as that machine is currently nonfunctional and the only one I have with a printer port I can't verify the Gecko.

Any thoughts on how to get this to work?

Thanks,

-aric.

Hi Aric,

I don't know, it sounds like you are doing everying correctly.  I assume you also have a ground connection.  There is also an estop jumper that the G540 needs and also the charge pump needs to be disabled.

Otherwise you could test by stepping manually using the Digital IO Screen to see if the hardware is working.   Cycle power on KFLOP so nothing is configured (you can't manually toggle bits that are configured as Step/Dir Outputs).  Then set IO 8 and 9 as outputs and toggle the state of bit 8 on and off.  The motor should step once for each toggle.  If the motor doesn't step check the voltage on I/O 8 (Step pin) with a volt meter to see what you get.

Regards
TK

Thanks so much for the tip on probing the voltages, TK, that was just what I needed to get this working! Turns out the cable wasn't seated into the 26 pin connector on the cable very well, so while it tested out fine for continuity by hand it would open the circuit when plugged into the KFLOP. Guess I should have made a new cable rather than simply pulling one out of the parts pile that had the right connector and fixing where things went on the DB25 end. Sigh.

Anyway, looks like I'm all set and thanks again for the speedy shipment last week. The board looks fantastic and I'm very excited to give it a try.
